Silence is goal-den as Bradford City put gag on Wells

6:30am Monday 26th August 2013

By Simon Parker

City 2, Sheffield United 0

City are making sure that Nahki Wells lets his scoring boots do the talking and nothing else.

The history-making striker is the Trappist monk of Valley Parade as the club inflict a vow of silence with the outside world – until 11.01pm next Monday at least.

They are trying to keep the goal-den boy under the radar until the transfer window finally slams shut. But it sure ain't easy when he keeps hitting the net with frightening frequency.

Wells gunned down Sheffield United with another two on Saturday to take it to half a dozen for him already this season.

It also etched his name in the club's record books as the first Bantam to ever score in eight successive games, eclipsing the previous mark set way back when by David Layne, John McCole and Jack Deakin.

In Bermuda, where he is up there with the president on the island's 'A' list, they have just unveiled a giant mural in his honour on the side of a restaurant.

Here, simply having Wells available for the squad for the Johnstone's Paint Trophy first round a week tomorrow would be cause for celebration.

While the official "not for sale" line remains, it would be naive not to think that an eye-watering late bid could still land on their doorstep in the next few days. August cannot end quickly enough.

So Wells was off limits for the post-match media but assistant boss Steve Parkin, who knows a thing or two about serious strikers, was happy to have his say.

He said: "It's terrific. I've been in this position before when I was at Rochdale and had Grant Holt and Ricky Lambert. It makes you sleep a bit better at night knowing that you've got a goal threat. That's what he is.

"Nahki's blessed with pace and he's got two good feet. He is also getting better at other things which he needs to do. The main thing is he keeps listening and learning from the manager and other staff."

The fact that Wells is still a work in progress must send a chill down the spine of every League One defender. But you can see the huge strides he continues to take under the careful tutelage of Phil Parkinson and his coaching staff.

Gone is the one-dimensional goal chaser who was all pace and shooting. Wells is becoming a more rounded team player with a growing football intelligence.

Parkin said: "For me, he's still got a long way to go. But he's got a good attitude and the other players don't let him get too big for his boots.

"He's got to remember what's got him there – the time and effort that other people have put in and his team-mates. It's not all about him and Nahki realises that."

But he was certainly the ultimate difference between the two sides in a pulsating Yorkshire derby.

Had it been Wells in Jamie Murphy's shoes when the Blades winger broke clear in the third minute, this contest could easily have swung the other way.

It was the type of predatory chance that the City hitman gobbles up for breakfast. But Murphy was foiled by the alertness of Jon McLaughlin.

Had it been Wells stretching to make the close-range volley that Joe Ironside put into the TL Dallas Stand, the game could have been level 20 minutes from time.

At the moment – well, since April 20 to be fair – Wells is in the sort of dream form where he cannot miss.

He is also benefiting from the confidence and momentum of those around him as City continue to ride the promotion wave. Memories of last week's blip at Port Vale were swiftly blown away.

Victory over Sheffield United at Valley Parade has been a long time coming. James Hanson was five days old when City last triumphed in November 1987; Wells not even a twinkle in the eye.

Eight games since have swung hugely in the visitors' favour, although Saturday was their first time back for a decade.

Such a big game was always going to be another early indicator of how City stand in League One. The audience of 18,041 was Valley Parade's largest league crowd since Portsmouth's promotion party on the last day of the 2003 season.

And if the atmosphere for the first home game was raucous, it had nothing on this. The place bounced from the opening minute right through to the last.

The City faithful have had to be so patient to see their beloved side finally rise up – and they are clearly determined to make the very most of every second of it.

The 12th man was outstanding again. Not that the 11 out on the pitch were too shabby either. Gone was the sloppiness and lapses in concentration that cost City at Vale Park.

There was a steely resolve about the hosts against opposition who were a definite step up on the previous Saturday.

The Blades are in a period of transition, a new manager merging new players into a new system. But there is plenty of talent there.

David Weir, who did a passable impression of Barack Obama on the touchline with his white shirt and stately poise, has been told he will have the time to mould them into a complete unit. But it won't happen overnight.

So while they posed a danger on the counter-attack, there was a lack of cutting edge. While Wells scores for fun, Blades lone frontman Lyle Taylor is still waiting to open his account after a summer move from Falkirk.

Wells had already checked his sights to force two saves from George Long – one unwittingly with his face – before the club record was set on the stroke of half-time.

Garry Thompson flicked a header into his path in the corner of the box but there was still plenty to be done. Wells leaned one way and then the other to throw off Sean McGinty before arrowing a drive across Long's dive.

City's advantage remained slender as the Blades had a go after the break. But Andrew Davies and boyhood Sheffield Wednesday fan Rory McArdle ensured the back door remained firmly shut.

A late second goal gave them much-needed breathing space – and no guesses for who got it.

Raffaele De Vita's snapshot popped up from Long's hands, the impressive Hanson steered it to Wells slap bang in front of goal and the result was beyond doubt.

So that's two home games, two wins and no goals conceded as City go marching on nicely. And another two on the growing scoresheet for the number 21 – but let's keep it to ourselves.

Attendance: 18,041

James Hanson thrilled to play alongside record-breaking Nahki Wells

Hanson thrilled to play alongside record-breaking Bradford City forward partner Wells

8:10am Monday 26th August 2013

By Simon Parker

James Hanson today saluted City record breaker Nahki Wells as the dream strike partner.

The club once again stressed that their Bermudian hot-shot is not going anywhere in the final week of the transfer window after his Valley Parade double sunk Sheffield United.

That is music to the ears of Hanson, who was thrilled to see Wells set a new City landmark after scoring for the eighth game in a row.

Hanson said: "Nahki's a pleasure to play with. He makes everyone else look better around him when he's playing that well.

"Sometimes he makes my assists look so easy. With the second one, as soon as I got the header in I knew it would be a goal – he's a match-winner.

"The gaffer keeps us on our toes and we're always working on different stuff on the training ground.

"Nahki's a big part of my game and we've got a great understanding. It can only be good for the club if we can keep him."

Assistant boss Steve Parkin underlined City's stance that they are not interested in any late bids for Wells. They rejected a Peterborough offer earlier in the summer.

Parkin said: "As far as we're concerned, it's a no-go area.

"Both chairmen have been really supportive of me and Phil (Parkinson) since we've been here. They've let us build a squad that was capable of getting promoted last year and is hopefully capable of competing this season.

"The key thing, and I've been there before, is that you don't sell your best players if you want success."

Parkin also praised the crucial role played by Hanson in City's second home win of the new season – at both ends of the pitch.

"He's a battering ram and his game's getting more subtle, holding the ball up better," said the Bantams number two.

"He's our talisman up top and he's fantastic picking up defensive set plays, as you saw again."

With seven points from the first four games, City have made a good start to League One and Hanson believes they have what it takes to be genuine contenders.

The big striker said: "We're quietly confident we can definitely be in the top six. I'm sure a performance like that will make people sit up and take notice of us.

"When the gaffer signed a lot of good players last summer, we all knew they were capable of playing in League One. Maybe that's what he was building for.

"It's been a good start and we've shown what we are capable of as squad. We play our own way, it's effective and it's working so far.

"The gaffer told us before the game that this time last year we were getting ready to play Wimbledon. Now we've got a Yorkshire derby in front of a full house and I'm sure it was great to watch.

"It had everything – such a quick tempo with tackles flying in, headers, no time for two touches – and I think we deserved to come out on top in the end."

City have handed talented young striker Oliver McBurnie a professional contract with the football club following his impressive recent scoring form.

McBurnie, 17, has penned a three-year pro deal this Friday at the Coral Windows Stadium to keep him at the football club until the summer of 2016.

Having started the season as an apprentice, the contract, which is effective immediately, is the first professional deal for McBurnie in his fledgling career.

The striker, who recently began training with Phil Parkinson's first team, will continue to play for City's youth team but will be available for selection for the senior side if and when the Bantams boss requires.

Wells is going nowhere, insists Bradford City boss

8:00am Wednesday 28th August 2013

By Simon Parker

Phil Parkinson insists there is no substance to the latest Nahki Wells rumours.

And the City chief is confident that his star striker is not about to disappear from Valley Parade through the transfer window.

Wells has begun the new campaign in explosive fashion with six goals in the first five games and is inevitably attracting talk of higher-level interest.

With the window open until next Monday night, QPR are the latest name to be thrown in the mix. National reports have linked Harry Redknapp's big spenders with a possible £3million bid.

But Parkinson is comfortable with the speculation and stressed that Wells is staying put.

He said: "There are always going to be rumours. You expect that.

"QPR have just signed Charlie Austin and others. I'm sure they won't be interested.

"It's fairly difficult at this point to let anyone go because it would be almost impossible to bring someone in. It's something we don't want.

"I want to keep improving the squad and not weakening it by losing players. That's the situation."

Wells netted twice against Sheffield United at the weekend to extend his remarkable scoring run to eight games on the trot.

It was thought he had set the new club record at the time but the Bermudian has actually equalled the tally set by Derek Stokes between December 1959 and February 1960.

Wells' finishing prowess was the difference in a pulsating Yorkshire derby. But the striker acknowledges the efforts of his team-mates.

Parkinson added: "Nahki knows the work that went in from the team on Saturday to make sure those goals were winning goals. He understands that.

"He is getting the headlines, which is great, but it was a terrific performance from the whole team.

"It's been a good start but we aren't getting carried away. We are just building something here."

City's back four laid the foundations for a first league win over the Blades in 26 years with a second home clean sheet. Wells grabbed the plaudits but Parkinson made sure the defensive efforts did not go unnoticed.

"The defence gave us a great platform to go and win the game from. The Carlisle game was quite an easy victory but we had to really push defensively – and everybody stood up to it.

"There were some terrific moments defensively which sometimes don't get highlighted but they do from me. Some of the blocks and headers were tremendous.

"It was a great advert for the division and I really enjoyed being involved. There were two honest, committed teams going head to head."

Bradford City in Burslem action replay as Vale prevail

7:40am Monday 19th August 2013

By Simon Parker

Port Vale 2 Bradford City 1

With his ten-hole Doc Martens, braces and hair cropped to the bone, the Vale fan looked like a menacing throwback to a bygone era.

Trips to Burslem can often feel like stepping back in time – and Saturday was certainly a frustrating case of déjà vu for City.

For the fourth time in five years, they trailed away from this unappealing corner of Stoke on the wrong end of a single-goal league defeat.

Once more there was that familiar feeling of "so near but so far" – beaten by an out-of-character blunder from James Meredith and a deflection.

City hadn't played particularly well but Phil Parkinson could still offer a case that they had the opportunities to have salvaged something.

So a damp and overcast Vale Park became the morning after the Carlisle night before. While nobody read too much into last week's romp – Coventry's efforts at Brunton Park this weekend underlined that – it still came as a slap in the face.

For Parkinson and his team, this is all part of the learning process as they adjust to life on the next tier. But you could still see the irritation etched on the manager's face afterwards.

Vale away is never a glamorous stop on the journey but he shouldn't have needed to remind the players that they were booking in for an afternoon at the university of hard knocks.

He knew what to expect – so did they. The point had been stressed in the build-up to expect a backlash from a Vale side wounded by a tongue-lashing from their own boss following a tepid display at Colchester.

Yet after a bright – and misleading – start, City soon found themselves hustled out of their game by opponents who were in their faces at every turn.

That pressing is a trademark of a Micky Adams side; hardly something that should have caught the Bantams on the hop.

But after an early seemingly goal-bound bullet from Nathan Doyle was deflected over, City spent most of the first half on the back foot.

Doyle was up for the fight and centre halves Andrew Davies and Rory McArdle were just as unflinching. But others around them had a rare off day.

The attacking edge was missing from City's game, blunted by the hand injury to James Hanson which very noticeably played on his mind. He won less than half the aerial challenges with marker Chris Robertson – unheard of for the big man.

The midfield, with Doyle the exception, were second best and Vale's wingers far more productive than their counterparts.

And whatever your opinion of Lee Hughes – and the baying away end left nobody in any doubt with their verdict – the former West Brom striker can still play.

His battle with McArdle was constant and reached a flashpoint midway through the first half when he accused the defender of going in late on the halfway line. Players pushed and shoved in the ensuing melee and so did the coaching staff as Parkinson pressed foreheads with Vale coach Rob Page.

Referee Carl Boyeson, normally never one backward at coming forward with cards, surprisingly chose to do nothing. He later annoyed the away end by being equally unmoved when Davies appeared to be wrestled to the floor at a corner.

For all the provocation, McArdle stuck to his task admirably. But Hughes still got his goal thanks to a catastrophic error from Meredith.

City appeared to have weathered any storm as half-time approached.

Tom Pope, still without a goal this season after leading the country last time, twice fluffed headers. The second was a free one he should have buried with his eyes shut and the striker was left pounding the ground with an angry fist.

Jon McLaughlin had thwarted Vale with a superb double save, diving to his left to block a Hughes volley and then clambering up in time to deny Kaid Mohamed's follow-up.

But City's resistance was broken in a self-inflicted manner three minutes from the interval.

Meredith turned to try a blind backpass, scuffed it badly and Hughes beat Pope to the interception, cutting wide of McLaughlin to have his revenge for the taunting fans behind the goal.

Parkinson called for a strong response when City attacked their own end and got it. By the hour, the visitors were back on level terms.

Inevitably it was Wells on the scoresheet to keep up his 100 per cent run for the season. It was a good way to mark his 50th league start for the club – and the first time he had netted against Vale in five attempts.

His own skill conjured the chance, cleverly flicking the ball over Adam Yeates to burst into the box. Keeper Chris Neal shovelled away his shot but Garry Thompson drilled it straight back and the Bermudian was lurking to apply the final touch.

The tide seemed to have turned and now it was City in search of the go-ahead goal as Wells met a Gary Jones cross but nodded over at the near post.

But no sooner were the visitors asking the questions than Vale were back in front.

It came from a corner after a cross had flicked off McArdle and landed on the roof of his own net. The set-piece dropped to Hughes, who laid it back for Doug Loft to let fly from 20 yards.

Although well struck, McLaughlin looked to have it covered until the shot took a fatal deflection off Jones and diverted into the top corner.

City were required to rescue a second deficit, just as they had done at Ashton Gate on the opening day.

Kyel Reid and Raffaele De Vita were thrown on and both subs could have been the hero. The Italian saw two efforts blocked by desperate penalty-area smothering while Reid, as enigmatic as ever, missed the far post by inches with a bobble from a defender.

More corners followed in the five minutes of added time but the disappointing delivery summed up the off-key display.

A traffic jam from hell clogging up the M6 on the way home won't have improved the mood. It had been another unpleasant experience in the Vale of gloom.

CITY CONFIRM £1.4m LINDLEY CATERING DEAL
By Ian McPherson (Sportmedia.com)

Bradford City have agreed a five-year catering contract with Lindley Venue
Catering (LVC).

The agreement, which is worth £1.4 million in total, will see Lindley Venue
Catering manage all public match day catering at Bradford's 25,000-seater
Coral Windows Stadium. A range of the firm's retail concepts – including
Franks' Original New York Streetdogs, The Pie Factory and Flaming Good
Burger – will be installed at the ground as part of the deal.

LVC, the specialist sports catering division of The Lindley Group, has
similar catering deals with fellow English clubs Rotherham FC, Doncaster
Rovers FC and Sheffield Wednesday FC.

David Baldwin, the director of operations at Bradford City FC, said: "The
club's promotion to League 1 has provided us with an ideal opportunity to
review our catering services and we believe Lindley Venue Catering is best
placed to help us to improve and develop the food offering for our fans and
away visitors on match days."

Jonathan Davies, The Lindley Group's sales and marketing director, added:
"As well as introducing new concepts and initiatives at the ground on match
days, we will also be working with the team at Bradford City AFC to engage
more with fans and encourage them to use the new facilities and support
their club even further with a percentage of the returns from catering being
reinvested into the club."

It's Hartlepool again for Bradford City

City will travel to Colin Cooper's Hartlepool in the first round of the Johnstone's Paint Trophy.

It will be a familiar trip for the Bantams - who have recently been there twice before in the competition. Last season, they won a second-round tie on penalties after the game finished goalless. City were eventually knocked out in the area semi-finals by Crewe.

As well as manager Cooper, Pools boast former Bantams Jack Compton and Nialle Rodney in their ranks.

The tie will take place in the first week of September.

Parkinson: Bradford City delivered statement of intent

6:30pm Saturday 10th August 2013

By Simon Parker

Phil Parkinson felt City's emphatic win over Carlisle sent out a statement in their opening home league game.

The Bantams eased to a 4-0 victory, scoring three of them in the first half hour.

Parkinson said: "The way we started was terrific. It was so important that we did that to make a statement of how we are going to play at home.

"I'm also realistic enough to know that we played a team that have gone into extra-time on Wednesday, whereas we were able to rest a lot of players. The freshness in our team was very evident.

"I know from the experience of last year how difficult it is to get going again, when you have extra-time in midweek. We capitalised on it terrifically well.

"Some of the football for 30 minutes of the first half was as good as we've seen here for a long time."

Bradford City 4 Carlisle United 0

Bradford City fans have been treated to some memorable occasions over the past ten months or so.

Just when you think that life following the Bantams cannot get any better, along comes another one of those afternoons that makes you so proud of this reborn club.

And so the League One era back at Valley Parade kicked off with a virtuoso home win – as dominant a result and performance as the old ground has witnessed in many years.

Like excited children waiting for Christmas Day, the supporters had been counting down the days for this since the fixtures were released in June. How it lived up to all the

expectations and more.

True, Carlisle turned up as a team there for the taking. But how often in City's past has that appeared the case only for the contest to disintegrate into a great let-down.

Not on Saturday; not by a long chalk. Valley Parade bounced to the theme of "Midland Road, take me home" as a claret and amber carnival got into full swing.

Let's not be naive, of course there will be much tougher challenges ahead. But just savour the moment and acknowledge a complete team performance which had everything.

How this must have hurt for Greg Abbott, back on the pitch where he carved his playing career.

Such a warrior in claret and amber, he looked shell-shocked by the way his Carlisle side were swatted away like a dozy fly. They showed none of the fighting spirit that he had

engendered in over 300 City games.

His post-match inquest was brutally frank. Abbott did highlight the financial inequality between the two clubs – "they are signing Mark Yeates on thousands and we're signing people

on hundreds" – but did not hide behind any excuses.

"Man for man," he sighed, "they were tougher, more experienced and had more nous. Bradford were all men and we've got too many young lads learning their trade.

"All over the field we were very much second best – and I start with the dug-out."

The 779 away fans, now rehoused back in the TL Dallas Stand, probably had an inkling this was coming. Most, if not probably all, would have seen Leyton Orient put five past them the week before.

One of the Carlisle press took one glance at their team an hour before kick-off and promised to streak across the pitch naked if they kept a clean sheet. Cumbrian gallows humour abounded.

With a 17-year-old making his debut at left back, a midfielder playing centre half alongside him and two untried loanee defenders drafted on to the bench, the back four looked a catastrophe waiting to happen.

I can't imagine goalkeeper Mark Gillespie had too much to say to his defence on the coach home. For one thing, he probably had no energy to speak given his one-man heroics to restrict the final scoreline to some vestige of respectability.

For most of the afternoon, he stood alone in futile resistance to the wave upon wave of amber attacks. But that should not detract from the quality of the home side.

Phil Parkinson had sent out his players with the message to deliver a statement of intent. As statements go, City's could not have been more emphatic if the Red Arrows had looped the loop over the Kop.

It was Wembley all over again; Carlisle cast in the whipping boy role of Northampton as they chased shadows to the delight of the raucous crowd.

Parkinson's decision to make so many changes at Huddersfield had not sat well with some. But here was the reason why he had viewed the midweek so dispassionately.

While Carlisle had been stretched to extra-time and penalties against Blackburn, the bulk of his side had enjoyed a Capital One Cup break.

Experience from last season had taught City how hard it was to raise themselves to go again a couple of days after an extended session. This time, the boot was on the other foot.

Parkinson called for a fast start to test Carlisle's weary legs and minds, and straight away City were up and at them.

Pre-match interview requests for Nahki Wells had been declined as Parkinson made sure the cocksure Bermudian let his football do the talking against his previous employers.

The Kop taunted Carlisle with their own take on why Wells had left Brunton Park for City two years ago. In truth, the callow youth who struggled to knuckle down for six months in

Cumbria was a completely different animal to the predatory striker who will be haunting the nightmares of centre half Danny Livesey after running them ragged.

Evidence of that growing maturity came with the assist for City's fourth, resisting the urge to go for goal himself after breaking through and instead waiting for Gary Jones to convert.

Wells still got his goal to keep up the 100 per cent scoring record for the fledgling campaign. But he will be annoyed with himself not to have got more than one, however impudent the finish.

Gillespie had already saved from him and James Hanson before the floodgates were opened on 20 minutes.

Given the way the keeper had started, you sensed it might take something special to beat him. The first goal certainly was.

Mark Yeates, the midfield puppet master, drifted in from the left and sent a stupendous right-foot blast beyond the stunned stopper. What a way for the Irishman to announce his arrival on his home debut.

It got better for City five minutes later with another finish of equal skill. Yeates's was all about power but Wells scored with guile, seizing on a lapse from Paul Thirlwell to nonchalantly curl home from a ridiculously tight angle.

And with Carlisle's heads still spinning, Livesey slipped as he challenged Hanson for a ball on the edge of the box. That allowed the striker the yard he needed to take a touch before slotting home his first goal of the campaign with his weaker right foot.

Three in nine minutes and you began to wonder how many columns the electronic scoreboard possessed. Parkinson once oversaw a 9-1 win for Colchester – it seemed a decent shout that tally could be under threat.

The fact that City scored just one more was not down to lack of trying. There was no hint of easing off after the break; their manager's insistence on maintaining a clean sheet did not take the edge off their attacking prowess.

Gillespie pulled off several blinding saves from Garry Thompson and Wells and chances flashed past the post as the onslaught continued.

The fourth goal eventually did come and underlined the team ethic of their headline-grabbing top scorer, rewarding veteran Jones for his 70-yard dash with a straight-forward tap-in.

The shot count rattled up well into the 20s and the fans kept on singing. Another great day to be a Bantam.

When the dust settled - match report

Last season's Wembley finalists Bradford City fall at the first hurdle

8:10am Wednesday 7th August 2013

By Simon Parker

Huddersfield Town 2 Bradford City 1

It started as the home cheers still rang out for James Vaughan's second goal of the night.

You know the tune well from last season. That one about promotion and not giving a "fig" because it's only a cup.

It became an ironic soundtrack of City's record-breaking run to Wembley. This time it was the booming backdrop of a first-round exit against the not very noisy neighbours.

City were the first finalists to start the following season in round one for 12 years and became only the second to fall at this stage. It previously happened in 1962 to Rochdale, the other fourth-tier team that went all the way.

Now up a division, the Capital One Cup is not a necessity for Phil Parkinson's men. Nobody can ever take away the fond memories but in the grand scheme of 2013-2014, establishing themselves in League One is all that matters.

That's not to say that pride was not dented by defeat in last night's local derby. But however much some may try to dress it up, it was no cup final when you've been to a real one so recently.

Vaughan, whose goal against Barnsley on the final day of last season prevented this becoming a league fixture this term, scored two more.

But a late strike from Nahki Wells, who had come off the bench, ensured City at least had the final say in defeat.

Huddersfield boss Mark Robins had been in the crowd at Villa Park in January when James Hanson's header completed City's epic journey to Wembley. So he knew not to take anything for granted against the renowned giant-killers.

Nor was he fooled by the multi-changed visiting line-up that kicked off in front of 4,000 boisterous away fans.

Parkinson had advertised that changes would be made to give everyone a run-out in the opening week and there were seven different faces from Saturday's first 11.

The watching Greg Abbott, who returns to Valley Parade on Saturday with Carlisle, would not have learned much.

Only Jon McLaughlin, Stephen Darby, Nathan Doyle and Garry Thompson remained – with two of those moving positions.

Thompson went up front alongside Alan Connell, a partnership that started three cup ties last season against Burton, Northampton and Port Vale. Doyle dropped back to centre half to partner debutant Matt Taylor.

Vaughan tried an over-ambitious overhead kick and Joel Lynch headed well wide from the first corner but the opening exchanges held no fear for the visitors.

City had their first chance to pressure Alex Smithies in the Huddersfield goal as Kyel Reid was fouled near the touchline 20 yards out. But the keeper came through the pack to punch away Raffaele De Vita's free-kick.

The Italian then headed Reid's deep corner straight into Smithies as Phil Parkinson's men began to find their feet.

For a local derby, the first quarter was fairly featureless, which suited City down to the ground. After the experiences of last year, they were not

fazed by the occasion and kept in a disciplined shape.

Reid was a willing outlet as always but his runs produced mixed results and he failed to impress referee Mark Haywood or the crowd with a fall on the edge of the D.

Huddersfield tried to lift the home fans with three corners in as many minutes but Anthony Gerrard failed to get any direction on headers from the first two and Jack Hunt almost took out the corner flag with a wild thrash from the third.

A mistake by Hunt gave Huddersfield's defence its first moment of discomfort. The right wing back carelessly passed straight to Connell on the edge of the box and his teasing low cross was turned away from the keeper by a sliding Peter Clarke.

Jonathan Hogg was in the Watford side humbled by City a year ago in round two and the Huddersfield summer signing was close to gaining some revenge with

a 25-yard blast that rattled the stanchion beside the goal – the first genuine chance of the evening.

But that was quickly followed with the opening goal. Stephen Darby cleared off the line from Adam Clayton after the former Leeds winger had cleverly danced his way through but the danger was far from over.

With the City fans still singing the right back's praises, the ball ricocheted into Vaughan's path 18 yards out and he drove hard and low past McLaughlin.

Coming right on half-time, it was a real blow for the Bantams. They responded with another corner – their fourth in the opening 45 minutes – but a brief scramble in the area failed to test Smithies.

Both sides swapped corners after the restart but it was Huddersfield – and Vaughan again – who made the first decisive strike of the half.

Adam Hammill, who had replaced Hunt at the break, whipped in a cross from the right and Vaughan's powerful header flew past McLaughlin.

Having struggled to create anything of note up to that point, City had a huge task on their hands. Thompson tried to respond as he wriggled between the centre halves but his effort on goal was tame.

A foul on the edge of the box then gave Reid a chance but his free-kick curled over the near post.

That was Parkinson's cue to call for the cavalry from a power-packed bench. On came Hanson, Wells and James Meredith for De Vita, Connell and Taylor.

Thompson returned to his regular right-wing role and McHugh moved into the centre of defence.

Hanson was straight into the thick of it with an early header but Huddersfield, even without Vaughan, who had made way to a standing ovation, threatened a third as Clayton found room to have a pop from distance.

Parkinson swapped his wingers round as they looked for a way through but there was little hint of a second fightback in four days. There was plenty of willing from the amber shirts but not enough guile to pick their way past a well-drilled backline.

Then suddenly Wells, who else, offered a lifeline with a thumping strike right on full time. Picking up the ball almost 30 yards out, he hammered a low drive past Smithies – a similar finish to Vaughan's first but further out.

It proved to be a defiant farewell. Two corners in stoppage time provided an anxious finale for Huddersfield before bragging rights were assured.

Phil Parkinson proud of Bradford City after Huddersfield defeat

Bradford City boss Phil Parkinson has praised his side's "spirited" performance in their Capital One Cup defeat by Huddersfield Town.

The Bantams, beaten in last season's final, lost 2-1 to their local rivals.

He told BBC Radio Leeds: "I thought the first-half performance was terrific and it was a real shame to concede just before the break.
"You always want to win but if you lose you want to go down fighting and we did. It was a spirited display."

He added: "I expected us to come and make a good game of it and we did."

Parkinson made seven changes to the side that drew with Bristol City in League One on Saturday but denied that the changes had weakened his team.

"I knew this would be a tough game against a really good side but I've got faith in every member of my squad," he said.

"I've said before that when I make changes it isn't weakening the side, it's putting players in who are fresh and some of the lads that came in did great."

From the Official BCFC Website:

GOLDEN BOOT FOR McBURNIE

It has been confirmed that City apprentice Oliver McBurnie has received the
Golden Boot for his part in helping Manchester United to their recent Milk
Cup success.

The second year scholar striker, who spent last week on work experience with
United during their time at the tournament, netted an impressive five goals
from five games, including two in the semi-final and the winner in the
final.

McBurnie's cup-clinching goal moved him to joint-top of the scoring charts
for the competition, meaning he was able to earn another accolade from his
memorable week.

The Milk Cup is an international junior tournament held each year in
Northern Ireland.

After seeing McBurnie grab the deciding goal in the final, United's Under
18s boss Paul McGuinness said: "In terms of Oliver McBurnie, I think what we
will do is pay tribute to Bradford who loaned him to us. He has enjoyed his
week and he will go back there a better player, so it is great for
everybody."

Following his success with the Red Devils in Ireland, McBurnie has now
returned to City's Apperley Bridge training ground to continue his
apprenticeship with the Bantams.

Final whistle - match report

http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/23474900
Rory McArdle's header gave promoted Bradford City a deserved point at Bristol City.

The hosts took the lead when Scott Wagstaff finished from Jay Emmanuel-Thomas's pass before Nahki Wells levelled after home keeper Frank Fielding was caught out of position.

Emmanuel-Thomas put the Robins back in front with a powerful finish after the Bantams defence gave him too much room.

McArdle drew the visitors level with a header from Raffaele De Vita's corner.

It was a first League One match since 2006-07 for both teams, the Robins having spent the last six seasons in the Championship while Bradford spent the same period in League Two.

Bristol City head coach Sean O'Driscoll told BBC Radio Bristol:

"Credit to Bradford, they didn't panic when we started as well as we did and got the goal.

"Their belief and trust in each other is something we are trying to agenda in to our squad.

"There's five new players out there so it's going to take some time to embed.

"There's enough there for us to work on and to make sure we work on certain aspects."

Parkinson delighted with "deserved" point for Bradford City

6:10pm Saturday 3rd August 2013

By Simon Parker

Phil Parkinson felt City got their just rewards with the first-day fightback at Bristol City.

The Bantams boss was delighted with his side's display against one of League One's pre-season favourites.

Goals from Nahki Wells and Rory McArdle saw the home side twice pegged back in an entertaining 2-2 draw at Ashton Gate.

Parkinson said: "I was so pleased. We started a bit slowly but we grew into the first half and finished it in great fashion.

"Then I thought we dominated the second and completely pinned them in up to their (second) goal. It was a shame to concede that because I could only see one winner up to then.

"Bristol City have got quality players and you get punished higher up the leagues you go. But we responded, kept going and got our rewards.

"It was a day where the way we played certainly warranted at least a point."

Bantams fans will never tire of watching McArdle goal repeats

7:00am Monday 5th August 2013

By Simon Parker

Bristol City 2 Bradford City 2

A compilation DVD of Rory McArdle's goals would not contain much variety.

Here's a header at the near post, and another, and one more, ad infinitum. In terms of the type of finish, it's fair to say you've seen one and probably seen them all.

It's become a running joke within the dressing room that McArdle does not score any other way. Not that anyone will ever get bored with these repeats.

They all count – and the goals that the defender puts away are always significant. Aston Villa, Wembley, the Easter Monday equaliser at Torquay which sparked the late promotion charge ... none of them were meaningless fillers when the result was already beyond doubt.

And now he can add the second equaliser at Ashton Gate which ensured that City began their 100th season of league football – and first in the third tier since 2007 – with a hard-earned and richly-deserved point.

Ironically McArdle was not immediately aware of where his flick header from Raffaele De Vita's corner had ended up. The momentum of the run had carried him over the advertising boards and he only realised it was a goal when a posse of blue shirts charged his way to celebrate.

McArdle was quick to praise the "spot-on" delivery from debutant De Vita, who once again highlighted the growing supply of set-piece takers within City's ranks.

Few teams are collectively taller than Phil Parkinson's men so the more crosses the merrier. With the summer arrival of De Vita, Mark Yeates and Jason Kennedy to add to Gary Jones and Kyel Reid, the big guys should not struggle for service.

"We've got some big boys in the team," said McArdle. "I know if I go to the near post and miss then Dava (Andrew Davies) is behind me or Thommo (Garry Thompson) and Hans (James Hanson) will be in there.

"There are a lot of lads who like heading a ball and will go and attack it.

"We practise it a lot in training and it's brilliant when that pays off. Yeatesy put a couple of great balls in during the first half and then Raf came on for him and put one right on the money."

The draw ensured City bucked a trend of four successive first-day defeats.

The form book had probably pointed to a stalemate given that Bristol City had also gone without a winning start since 2008.

But that would undersell the determination of the visitors and their refusal to buckle after twice going behind to opponents who are strongly tipped to be in the promotion shake-up.

Bristol City have undergone major change since relegation but there is quality in their make-up. The unsure defending may have borne the mental scars from last season but with the ball they are a real handful.

There was no Albert Adomah, City's long-term nemesis in his Barnet days, as he pushes for a move to either Wigan or Middlesbrough.

But Scott Wagstaff, a recent target for Parkinson, and Jay Emmanuel-Thomas provided the guile to keep the visitors on their toes. And centre forward Sam Baldock was clearly an intelligent step or two up on what they have become used to facing in League Two.

The way the Bantams came through a tentative opening to match them backed up the feeling that they will hack it at the next level.

According to one national newspaper's ins and outs on Saturday morning, Andrew Davies and Nathan Doyle had both gone in the summer.

Wishful thinking from their rivals maybe as both were very much at the heart of this encouragingly composed opening performance. Doyle, in particular, was a considerable presence in midfield, where the benefits of a proper pre-season under his belt were clear with the way he got around the pitch.

City maintained the momentum from last season's charge over the line to the delight of their 1,072 noisy travelling fans. The Midland Road anthem boomed out with pride in a second half which saw the natty new blue away shirts camped in home territory.

The fans almost had a goal to cheer inside five minutes as Nahki Wells rattled a post with his header from a Yeates free-kick, firing the rebound into the ground and over the bar.

But that was an isolated attack as the visitors took time to settle into their new loftier surroundings.

Bristol City's attack were asking difficult questions and soon made the breakthrough. Emmanuel-Thomas found his route blocked off on the edge of the box but the ball broke for Wagstaff to score off a post.

The irony of conceding to a player who could well have been lining up for the Bantams would not have been lost on Parkinson.

For a while, City were caught in the headlights as the hosts probed for a second. But the uncertainty passed and they hit back with an equaliser which owed as much to cool heads as Bristol City goalkeeper Frank Fielding losing his.

Fielding, the keeper that Stuart McCall long coveted in his Valley Parade reign, made a mad dash out of his area to confront a rampaging Hanson.

The striker muscled his way wide and then showed composure to resist the temptation of a shot from a very difficult angle and pick out Wells instead.

The Bermudian duly picked off the first of his 30-goal target with a confident finish between the legs of defender Liam Fontaine on the line.

Back on terms, City began the second half with the bit between their teeth – only to come unstuck again from Bristol's first attack of intent.

Baldock linked up tidily with Emmanuel-Thomas, who beat Jon McLaughlin as the defenders held off.

To fall behind again after such a positive spell of play could have burst the bubble. Instead it gave City another chance to show that indomitable streak that Parkinson has forged.

Sean O'Driscoll, as wily a manager as any in the league, acknowledged the strength of team spirit within the Bantams ranks and talked afterwards

about trying to engender that in his own side. As we saw last year, that close bond and belief in everyone around can take you a very long way.

The City fans sensed it as they continued to belt out their songs. Their team was far from beaten.

Wells continued to pull Bristol City around with his movement and Doyle went close with a snap volley.

The reward came with 11 minutes to go as De Vita, the winger Parkinson homed in on when Wagstaff chose Bristol over Bradford, picked out McArdle.

And you know the rest.

Neither team was content to settle for the draw and chances flowed in a frantic finale. De Vita should have buried a close-range volley then McLaughlin's knees denied Greg Cunningham.

Frantic, exciting stuff enjoyed by all who had made the trip from West Yorkshire. On first impressions, there could be plenty more of the same to follow.

LENNY HANGS UP HIS BOWLER AND BROLLY

Bradford City can announce that after a period approaching 20 years
performing as club mascot City Gent, Lenny Berry has decided to call time on
his association with the role.

Lenny's decision was conveyed to Bantams Director Roger Owen at a meeting at
the Coral Windows Stadium late last Friday afternoon.

Mr Owen told the club's official website: "I met Lenny late Friday and he
gave me his decision, which he had been pondering for some three weeks.

"As the matter had been the subject of discussion at our Board Meetings over
recent weeks, it was only right that I advised my fellow Directors of
Lenny's decision, and this was done at Bristol City yesterday (Saturday).

"On behalf of the Board, I would like to thank Lenny for his efforts over
what has been a long time, in all weathers and through the various fortunes
of the club.

"He has brought fun and enjoyment to many, particularly our fans at the
younger end of the age scale, and he finishes with our best wishes for the
future, which I understand will include being a Season Ticket holder
somewhere in the stadium."

Owen added: "Over the last week or so I have been made aware of various
speculation around Lenny which has appeared on some social websites and fan
sites.

"Without breaching the confidence I promised Lenny, I feel some explanation
of the sequence of events should be made to avoid confusion and conflict
which does seem to rule these sites from time to time.

"Following the end of last season we had two key Board Meetings, the first
of which focused on Phil (Parkinson) and his plans going forward.

"The second meeting looked at more general issues, one of which was the
issue of mascots - The City Gent and Billy Bantam.

"In the case of Billy, it was agreed that the purchase by him and upkeep of
his outfit had been a great improvement last season.

"In the case of The City Gent, the main issue was his physical appearance,
which was much changed from the original concept of the then-Chairman, the
late Stafford Heginbotham, who styled The City Gent on himself.

"We agreed that action needed to be taken. It was also agreed that Lenny be
formally contacted, by letter, to put our various points to him and to
suggest that the club obtain a Sumo-type suit with character head piece to
represent the Gent.

"The Football League had told us at the time of the (League 2) Play-Off
Final that only animal or human mascots were now appropriate if they wore an
anonymous headset. Dusty Miller at Rotherham is a good example.

"Lenny was given a deadline to respond, which was extended and then not
complied with by our meeting on Friday.

"I had also explained to Lenny that he would cease to be part of the mascots
match-day ground tour because of the size of his suit and as such he would
cease to be paid and have his taxation affairs dealt with by the club.

"Lenny asked about the continuation of his appearance at charity events and
he was told that these would cease as the club had not been given a full fix
on his activities and we cannot have possible conflict.

"At that point Lenny advised me that he would cease his role as City Gent
with immediate effect.

"The Board have now decided that as we are adequately covered by Billy
Bantam, the Bantams being our real nickname, and that the City Gent name
lives on in the excellent club Fanzine produced by Mike Harrison, we will
not replace The City Gent as a mascot."

Bristol City Preview

TEAM NEWS

Bristol City start life in League One with a new-look squad, overhauled after their relegation from the Championship.

Six new players have arrived during the summer, while their only major injury problem is midfielder Liam Kelly, who is out until after Christmas.

Bradford City could hand debuts to their four summer recruits.

The Bantams bought in defender Matt Taylor, midfielders Mark Yeates and Jason Kennedy and forward Raffaele De Vita after promotion from League Two.

Bristol City head coach Sean O'Driscoll told BBC Points West:

"Momentum will be the key for Bradford. Any team that gets promoted, and has the season they had in the cup, are going to be confident.

"They've added well to the squad and they will be a threat in this division.

"All I want is improvement. We have to put processes in place. If you're going to be successful then you have to have a way of doing it.

"We want to create an identity that everyone can buy in to. We're not always going to agree on everything, but as a team we know we have to work better together."

Bradford City boss Phil Parkinson told BBC Radio Leeds:

"I'm pleased with how pre-season has gone. We look to be in good shape.

"Success for me is that we look back at the end of the season and say we carried on from what we did last season.

"There are so many teams in this league that could be up there. No one would have predicted Yeovil would be up there last season, that could be us this year.

"Bristol City are going to be one of the favourites for the division because they came down with a lot of quality but with that there comes a lot of pressure and expectation.

Taylor joins as Nelson departs
1st August 2013

Bantams boss Phil Parkinson has completed his fourth signing of the summer this Thursday by securing the signature of commanding centre half Matt

Taylor, paving the way for fellow defender Michael Nelson to depart the Coral Windows Stadium to join Scottish Premiership side Hibernian.

Taylor joins the Bantams on a two-year deal, with Nelson signing for Hibs on a permanent basis for the same length of contract.

The move for Nelson, whose contract was due to expire at the end of the season, will see the defender return to Scotland after he joined City from Kilmarnock back in January.

Well known for his committed displays, Taylor arrives at Valley Parade on a free transfer having spent the past two seasons with Charlton Athletic.

His first season at The Valley - the 2011/2012 season - saw the defender named as the club's vice-captain and play an integral part in the Addicks side that secured the League 1 championship.

Taylor then featured in 12 matches for Charlton in the Championship last season.

While Taylor moves to City on a free, Nelson joins Hibernian for an undisclosed fee.

Parkinson said: "Matt is a good signing for us. He played a key role in the Charlton side that got promoted to the Championship a couple of seasons ago and he was part of a successful Exeter side before that.

"He's a good age for a centre half and he's a winner.

"I am sure the supporters will enjoy watching him play because he gives it his all. He will certainly add to what we have in the squad already.

"Nelse (Michael Nelson) had the opportunity to go back up to Scotland, but I needed both deals to work before either one could go through.

"We have a tight-knit group here, so I couldn't afford to give someone up if I wasn't able to bring someone else in.

"That meant we pretty much spent all of yesterday (Wednesday) working away to ensure both deals got gone.

"Nelse came in last season and played his part in helping the side into the Play-Offs, and we thank him for that.

"He has managed to effectively secure a further year on his contract with this move and we wish him all the very best for the future."

Subject to Football Association and Football League clearance, Taylor will now be in contention to make up part of Parkinson's travelling party

for this weekend's Sky Bet League 1 opener at Bristol City.

Taylor will wear shirt number 15 this season.

Before his move to Charlton, The Chorley-born defender enjoyed four years with Exeter City, helping the Grecians secure promotion up into the Football League during that period.

Despite looking at home in central defence, Taylor amazingly began his playing career in goal.

The thirty one year-old featured for the likes of Burscough, Rossendale United, Matlock Town, Halifax Town and Guiseley as a goalkeeper during his early playing days.

His conversion to centre half came when Taylor, who was studying at Sheffield University at the time, impressed Team Bath boss Ged Roddy while playing in the 2006 British Universities Games.

Roddy signed Taylor for Team Bath that summer before the defender's impressive performances earned him a move to Exeter barely a year later.

Mr Campbell, 56, who scored a record 137 goals for the Bantams, and his 55-year-old wife Paula, have been bailed pending further inquiries by police investigating a complaint of fraud at Lindley WMC in Huddersfield.
