We'll be a force next season, vows Bradford City boss Parkinson
7:20am Monday 7th May 2012
By Simon Parker

Phil Parkinson put the lid on City's season and admitted he never wanted to experience another struggle for survival.

Saturday's goalless draw with champions Swindon meant an 18th-place finish – the same position as 12 months ago.

Parkinson was delighted his side signed off well and then revealed his determination to make up for another troubled campaign.

He said: "Normally you're drained when you reach the end of the season but I'm looking forward to the next one already.

"I'm ready to get stuck in to building a squad to make sure we never feel the pressure we had this year. It wasn't nice at certain periods.

"Pressure always comes with the job but I want the pressure of getting this club challenging at the top end of the table.

"But to do that we've got to have a good team – and we're going to get one."

A terrible run of only one win from nine games in March left City genuinely fearing for their future. But they recovered to finish six points

clear of the drop zone.

Parkinson added: "When you're managing Bradford City, a player or a chairman, the pressure is obviously that much greater than with some of the

lesser-sized clubs in this division. That's not being disrespectful to them, just the fact this club has got great history and tradition.

"If we had got sucked into the bottom two it would have been a travesty, because this club and our supporters don't deserve that.

"We've got to make sure we never get in that position again. Nobody wants to be there and the only way we'll stop that happening is by working

hard in the summer.

"We'll try to keep the players we want to keep and add to them.

"When I was appointed Bradford City manager, one of the reasons I really wanted to come here was the thought that if I can get this club going,

the sky's the limit.

"That's why it's a good job to have and we're relishing the challenge."

CHAMPIONS LEAGUE JOY FOR MOTHERWELL BOSS STUART McCALL

Manager Stuart McCall is thrilled after Motherwell clinched a Champions
League place for the first time.

Dundee United's loss to Rangers means the Steelmen will finish third in the
Scottish Premier League.

And second-placed Rangers are certain to miss out on Europe due to their
ongoing financial problems.

"The fans can start getting the passports out and looking ahead to what
might be some great times ahead," McCall told BBC Radio Scotland.

"I got my first text at quarter to six this morning and the players will be
buzzing."

The Fir Park side have been in the top three places from the start of the
season and have already surpassed their record tally of points in the SPL.

"Our consistency levels have been great," added former Scotland midfielder
McCall. "The players have been outstanding and we've been fortunate with
injuries.

"We also had good continuity since we managed to keep most of the players
from last season, which will be difficult to do next season.

"We've had a dire set of results against the Old Firm; seven games, seven
defeats, but from the other 29 games we've only lost four.

"So, to be best of the rest is a great achievement and to get 61 points,
which is a SPL record for Motherwell, is a real credit to the squad."

Once Rangers' non-participation is officially confirmed, Motherwell will go
into the non-champions section of the draw in the third qualifying round.

They will be unseeded, and while too many factors are still undecided, could
face teams of the calibre of Dinamo Kiev or Braga.

MICHAEL FLYNN UPSET BUT NOT BITTER AT CITY EXIT
By Simon Parker (T&A)

Michael Flynn today admitted he had wanted to finish his playing career
at Valley Parade.

The former City skipper left the club at the end of last week after three
years.

Flynn, who made 104 appearances and scored 14 goals, revealed it was a huge
wrench to walk away.

He said: "Bradford City meant a lot to me. It wasn't just a football club.

"I've had chances to move before and go up the league on more money but I
decided not to because I was so fond of the place.

"I wanted to be part of getting City promoted. That's why I stayed. I would
have ended my career there if I could. Unfortunately it wasn't to be.

"I'm really disappointed to have left but I understand how football works.
There's no bitterness at all."

Flynn was a regular in the City side for the first half of the season until
he suffered a serious stomach illness.

He spent Christmas in hospital and missed the next two months, struggling to
win back his place afterwards.

"It didn't mean I suddenly became a bad player but obviously it really put
me back," he said.

"I remember the Southend away game just before. It was a really hard night
but Ricky (Ravenhill) and I were fitter than their midfield.

"I thought to myself afterwards 'I'm feeling really strong now and back to
my best'. I was ready to kick on but then four days later I ended up on my
death bed with that illness.

"It was one of those freak things but nothing goes to plan in my life."

Flynn also paid tribute to the City supporters.

"The fans were absolutely outstanding to me and I can't thank them enough,"
he said.

"You get one or two boos from time to time but they've had so much doom and
gloom to put up with. They are entitled to be frustrated at times and I
fully understand.

"They've got to realise they are a massive part of that club. Bradford City
are nothing without them."

Linked with Bristol Rovers last summer, Flynn is confident of finding a new
club.

The Welshman said: "There are a few irons in the fire. I've put a few
feelers out but I'm not expecting anything to happen this month – nobody
wants to be paying my May wages.

"I just want to get a clear head and assess what's out there. There are so
many players knocking about but you look at the list and a lot of them are
inexperienced.

"I've got over 350 games under my belt and have faith in my ability. I'm 31
now and there will be someone out there looking for an experienced
midfielder."
