McLaughlin has world at his fingertips

City rookie Jon McLaughlin will represent Great Britain in the World Student Games.

The 21-year-old keeper has been picked for the illustrious university competition which will take place in Serbia

between June 30 and July 12.

It means McLaughlin will miss the first fortnight of pre-season – but he goes with Stuart McCall's blessing.

Britain kick off against Mexico on the opening day and are also in the same group as Austria and Ghana. But the

round-robin system involving the 16 countries taking part means McLaughlin is likely to play a minimum of six

games.

    Someone's telling porkies...

KEITH HILL NOT HAPPY WITH BANTAM'S STUART McCALL
By Ian Clarkson June 16, 2009

Next season's League Two clash between Rochdale and Bradford City promises
to be explosive after Dale boss Keith Hill entered into a war of words with
    his Bantams counterpart Stuart McCall.

Hill is angry after claims made by McCall that Simon Ramsden had joined
Bradford from the Spotland based club without being offered a more lucrative
    contract.

However, Hill is livid and insists his former right back is on more money at
Valley Parade than he was on last season with Rochdale.

Hill told Rochdale's official website: "I don't know what Stuart McCall is
doing, whether he is hiding behind a propaganda vehicle or something.

"My guess is that he has asked players to take a cut in wages and he is
using the money to bring in players like Rammers.

"The figures I have been told [Ah-ha!] will mean Simon will get a hefty pay
rise in comparison to the one he was on here.

"The truth is he has gone to Bradford and he is being paid more money. Simon
Ramsden is looking after his own financial future and you cannot knock him
for that, but for McCall to come out and say he is on the same money, well
    it is not the case."

McCALL: RAMSDEN DEAL 'IS THE SAME'
    By Simon Parker (T&A)

Stuart McCall has contacted Rochdale boss Keith Hill to set the record
straight over new signing Simon Ramsden.

McCall was unhappy to see Hill's suggestion that City had offered a lot more
for the defender but were denying it.

Hill also claimed that the money being saved on cutting wages elsewhere was
being used to fund the signing. But McCall rang Spotland today to clear the
    air.

He said: "I told Keith exactly what we are paying and it's the same as they
offered. He'd been misled into thinking it was more.

"Simon fits in the wage budget that we have set for this season. There's no
way I'm asking players to take cuts to use the money elsewhere.

"That's the truth 100 per cent. I've explained all this to Keith, he's
accepted it and hopefully that's the end of the matter."

TANGERINE DREAM OVER FOR BANTAMS

Dundee United have withdrawn from their pre-season friendly against Bradford
City at Valley Parade scheduled for August 1.

The Bantams will now play Greg Abbott's Carlisle in the final warm-up game
before the start of the 2009/10 season on the same day.

Former Bradford defender Abbott, who spent nearly nine years at Valley
Parade, was installed as John Ward's permanent replacement at Brunton Park
in November.

Peter Thorne will spearhead City's attack again next season – after
cutting his pay packet by half.

Thorne has agreed to play on for a third year in the claret and amber.
And delighted boss Stuart McCall does not believe it will be his last.

Thorne, City's top scorer for the past two seasons, is 36 on Sunday but
has no plans to call it quits just yet.

McCall said: "A couple of seasons ago he was probably looking to wind
down but now he is enjoying his football that much that he wants to
continue.

"We met up on holiday and Pete was very interested when I was telling
him about playing on until I was 40. He is certainly enjoying his
football and it doesn't sound like he wants to pack in soon.

"When he had two years at Norwich only playing the odd game then that
can affect you. But he's playing regularly for us and scoring goals –
and strikers always get a buzz from hitting the back of the net."

Thorne, one of McCall's first signings, has scored 32 goals in 65
starts. He was among League Two's top scorers last term, despite missing
spells with a neck and back injury.

McCall added: "Pete got 17 league goals in 32 games last season; the
likes of Andy Bishop at Bury, who's been well-courted, scored 16 in 39
and that was including penalties.

"The leading scorer was on 20 and if you look back to Thorney's header
that wasn't given at Lincoln and the two legitimate 'goals' against
Dagenham, then he would have equalled that.

"Obviously with the little niggles that Thorney has had there's no
guarantee he will play X amount of games. That's why finding the right
package for him was tough.

"But if he does get 30 to 35 games there's a good chance he will end up
with 15 to 20 goals, as he has done for the last two seasons. That's why
I was desperate to keep him.

"We know we've got a good goal scorer and now it's about finding the
right one alongside him.

"If we manage to bring in a young one up front, they can only learn from
Pete."

McCall confirmed that City are in the hunt for Macclesfield's Gareth
Evans. But the 21-year-old's compensation fee could prove a stumbling
block.

McCall said: "We've made an inquiry but at the moment nothing will be
happening because of the fee Macclesfield are after."

Meanwhile, Oldham have emerged as serious rivals to sign Dean Furman.

FALL FROM GLORY...

There's an interesting article regarding the 14 clubs that plunged from the
Premiership down two divisions or more.

A nice little graph shows each clubs standing since 1992.
