Final whistle - match report

Unofficial quote of the day

"And to rub it in, referee Steve Bratt apologised to Gary Jones after the match for giving a corner when it should have been a goal kick!"

-----

Ref takes centre stage as Bradford City fluff their lines

6:20am Monday 18th February 2013

By Simon Parker

AFC Wimbledon 2, City 1

In the world of theatre it's seen as a good thing to have a faulty dress rehearsal.

Make a couple of rickets in the warm-up and it doesn't matter. Get them out the system before the major curtain call.

That's what City will be hoping after suffering the most head-scratching defeat of their season against the side currently propping up the entire

Football League.

Hardly the ideal preparation for the biggest game in the club's modern history six days from now.

So perhaps it's for the best that City leaked two soft goals this week rather than next. Better to be beaten three minutes into stoppage time at

Kingsmeadow than Wembley.

But that shouldn't mask the fact that this was three points criminally tossed away. As one deflated fan remarked later, Wimbledon might as well

have carried a swag bag over their shoulder.

For the second season running, City left Kingston-upon-Thames – which is nowhere near as leafy as it may sound – with a seething sense of

injustice at the referee.

Last time it was Darren Deadman and the two phantom penalties. On Saturday, the visitors were berating the officious Steve Bratt for giving a

corner that should have been a goal-kick.

Bratt even apologised afterwards – as, those with long memories will recall, he did to Steve Schumacher for an errant red card during City's

relegation to the bottom flight. Just like then, it meant nothing.

The damage had already been inflicted by on-loan Crawley striker Gary Alexander, who took advantage of defensive discontent to leap highest and

hardest with a firm flick-header into the far corner of Matt Duke's net.

So the team that had not won at home since October had pick-pocketed victory from the team that are in the last two of the Capital One Cup.

Football, at least, is never predictable.

There are those who would have seen it coming. Typical City, they will say, after the most professional of midweek away wins at form side Wycombe

is followed by late surrender to the division's wooden spoonists.

But the performance should have been good enough to clinch the win double that would have sent them down Wembley Way with a spring in the

collective step. For 83 minutes, that looked the case with a first league double seemingly secure.

Those doubting their mentality with Swansea so tantalisingly close should have been silenced.

While the Swans finished their preparations at Anfield yesterday, a trip to the home of Wimbledon and Kingstonian could not have been more of an

extreme to City's next port of call.

The Wembley car park is probably bigger than a ground with a capacity of 4,720. Wembley's last fixture saw England take on Brazil – Kingsmeadow's

was a visit from Concord Rangers!

Throw in a pitch with more sand than Southport and a home side fighting for their league lives and all the ingredients were there for a banker

defeat.

It's just nobody would have predicted the manner in which it unfolded. "We snatched defeat from the jaws of victory," sighed a disbelieving Duke

as he boarded the team bus.

Meanwhile, the din drifting from the open window of the Wimbledon dressing room illustrated what the smash-and-grab three points – their first

win in six – had meant to them. The battle for survival could not be tighter.

At the other end of the table, City's hopes of closing right in on the pack fell by the wayside; that great result in Wycombe wasted in the final

act.

Phil Parkinson had kept the same team as he looked for a similar outcome. That should have been the reward.

Nahki Wells and James Hanson were again left to recharge batteries on the sidelines, while Andrew Davies had another opportunity to establish his

match fitness at centre half.

The big defender did seem to be limping in the closing stages after suffering what turned out to be a spasm in his calf. On a couple of occasions

he reassured the bench that all was well and stayed on for the duration.

It was a call that had some questioning the manager for not forcing a change but Parkinson insisted Davies was, and will, be fine.

A travelling army of 621 was a great turn-out, given the expected costs of cup final weekend. Even if City's numbers are regular boosted by a

healthy number of southern-based fans, there was still a significant amount who had trekked down the M1 a week early.

They were not rewarded with the greatest of spectacles. The first half, in fact, was pretty dire.

Bratt's whistle took centre stage, stopping any flow of a game that was already hampered by the bobbly, uneven pitch.

City were never in any danger. But neither, if truth be told, were Wimbledon as any shots of such were hopeful efforts from long distance that

did not force a save at either end.

Nearly an hour had passed when Dons winger Toby Ajala, whose lack of end product nullified an impressive acceleration, finally forced a

regulation stop from Duke.

That sparked an immediate – and decisive – reply from City. Kyel Reid flicked a through-ball towards the box, defender Alan Bennett got nowhere

near enough on his back-header and Garry Thompson latched on to it with the crispest of volleys past 42-year-old keeper Neil Sullivan.

It was a cracking finish and another powerful statement for a player who must have a great chance of starting on Sunday, though probably back in

a wide midfield role.

Thompson could have nailed the game from City's next attack. With Wimbledon wobbling, he stole a march on Bennett again but the ball kicked at

the crucial moment and his shot skewed wide.

Reid then fired across goal as the visiting momentum continued to build – but a second goal did not materialise. Not for the first time, City

paid dear for being unable to complete the kill.

By this point, Neal Ardley had used all three substitutes and the changes made a difference. Top scorer Jack Midson, mystifyingly left out of the

first 11, gave Alexander the support he needed up front. French winger Kevin Sainte-Luce's arrival injected more pace.

Sainte-Luce was picked up after being bombed by Cardiff over an assault charge. He still can't play away games because he is on a curfew to be

back in Wales by 8pm.

Ryan Dickson certainly knew he was there – though Sainte-Luce had no impact in the 83rd-minute equaliser which was credited to the unfortunate

left back.

City were slow to pick up from a quick throw-in and Pim Balkestein's cross seemed to catch everyone unawares before ending in the net. Midson

milked it – and was still claiming the goal afterwards – but the last touch was off Dickson.

Suddenly three points had become one – and even that disappeared in the last of the three added minutes.

City had just cleared out Wimbledon's first corner of the game when Midson over-ran the ball as he tried to beat Stephen Darby.

Both sides turned to trot upfield for the goal-kick but Bratt, on the advice of an assistant, changed his mind and gave the corner. Alexander's

head did the rest.

When the dust settled - match report

Blow for Bradford City ahead of Wembley

7:40am Monday 18th February 2013

By Simon Parker

Referee Steve Bratt admitted he blundered over the game-winning corner as City stumbled in their last warm-up for Wembley.

Bottom club Wimbledon's last-gasp victory left a sour taste to begin the build-up to Sunday's Capital One Cup showpiece with Swansea.

Gary Jones revealed that the official had apologised for getting it wrong over the corner which led to Gary Alexander's winning header.

Jones said: "It was never a corner. The linesman gave it from the other side of the pitch – there must have been ten bodies in the way.

"I asked the referee at the end of the game and he said he'd made a mistake.

"That doesn't cushion the blow after losing in the last minute. It was a massive error from the referee but we've still got to defend it and then

we get a point."

City looked to be cruising towards back-to-back away wins once Garry Thompson fired them in front. But unlike at Wycombe, they were unable to

find a second goal – and were stunned by a late one-two.

Skipper Jones said: "I don't know how we lost that game. The second half was the most one-sided I've played in all season.

"That was probably our best away performance. We were totally in control of the game.

"Thommo scored a great goal and maybe should have scored a second but the pitch had a lot to do with it. The ball wouldn't sit down for him.

"It's a massive disappointment because we were in total control."

Defeat leaves the Bantams still seven points adrift of the League Two play-offs, with a game in hand as they switch focus to the cup final.

Jones said: "Football's like that. It kicks you when you don't expect it.

"It would have been brilliant going to Wembley on the back of two wins. That's not the case.

"But we've got to pick ourselves up. There's no point in dwelling on it now and we've got a great week coming up."

Phil Parkinson denied that Wimbledon's first home win since October was down to City thinking of Wembley.

The City chief said: "People might say that but it's totally inaccurate. I thought the lads were magnificent.

"We just needed that extra goal to kill them off but couldn't get it. I thought they were there for the taking and we should be talking about

three points.

"I just felt so confident. I couldn't see them having a shot, let alone scoring a goal – and they scored two.

"Their corner looked like a goal kick to me. All the players started walking towards the halfway line then the ref appeared to change his mind.

"The fourth official said to him on his mic that he thought he was wrong. But we've still conceded two sloppy goals."

Parkinson also confirmed that Andrew Davies was "fine" after the defender was troubled by a calf spasm in the closing minutes.

CITY SEEK ADVICE ON STEWART COMPENSATION RULING
By Simon Parker (T&A)

City have moved a step closer to appealing against FIFA's decision to order
them to pay Falkirk £215,000 in training compensation for Mark Stewart.

The club's solicitors have asked for the details of how the governing body
came to their ruling.

Ben Jones, partner at Bradford firm Petherbridge Bassra, said: "The
motivated decision has been requested and will be scrutinised by myself and
Simon Csoka QC of Carmelite Chambers.

"The early indications are that it will lead to positive advice on appeal
being submitted to the club."

The same legal team successfully restored City to the FA Cup in December
after they were initially kicked out for fielding Curtis Good when he was
ineligible.

Director of operations David Baldwin said: "We've instructed legal counsel
and we will sit down in due course when all the information has been
provided by FIFA to decide about an appeal."

Stewart, who now plays for Dundee, moved south of the border to City in the
summer of 2011 before Phil Parkinson came in. But he failed to score a goal
and finished the season on loan at Hamilton.

McArdle fighting to be fit for Bradford City at cup final

7:30am Saturday 16th February 2013

By Simon Parker

Rory McArdle is staying open-minded about his chances of making Wembley.

City are pulling out all the stops to get their versatile defender back in time for the Capital One Cup final a week tomorrow.

McArdle has been sidelined for a fortnight since injuring his ankle in the first half at Fleetwood. But intensive treatment with medical team

Matt Barrass and Chris Royston has raised the chances of a quick recovery.

The Northern Ireland international refuses to give up but remains philosophical about lining up against Swansea.

"Each day so far it's been a lot better but I don't really know if I'll be ready," he said.

"If I do make it, that will be a relief. If I don't, I will be gutted but it's one of those things.

"If there are any problems and Matt says it's not worth risking it, then I'll have to accept it.

"But Matt and Chris are doing everything they can. I'm getting treatment twice a day and hopefully all their hard work will pay off."

McArdle had played more minutes than anyone else in the squad until he was forced to hobble off at Highbury.

After initial fears about the severity of the problem, the swelling had subsided by the following morning.

A scan at the end of last week still suggested there could be more serious damage. But that did not stack up with how McArdle was feeling and a

specialist confirmed that he was on the mend.

The defender said: "The scan came back saying the injury was a grade three, which was a torn ligament. That's the worst-case scenario.

"But Matt was adamant it didn't feel like that when he checked and I wasn't in any pain.

"We saw the specialist and luckily he agreed and was happy with how stable the ankle was.

"I've been in the gym, on the cross trainer, on the trampoline and started straight-line running again on Thursday morning. I'm slowly getting

there.

"If I keep on top of it then hopefully it won't get any worse and by next week I can get back into training.

"The final is a once in a lifetime opportunity but just to miss games in general is hard.

"But Tuesday was a great result because the league form's not been what it should be. I see no reason why we can't get another win at Wimbledon

and then that sets us up nicely for an enjoyable week before Wembley."

Final whistle - match report

Report by Simon Parker (T&A)

Nathan Doyle scored his first goals for City as they stunned in-form Wycombe
for a fourth away win of the season.

The Bantams bounced back to form in stunning fashion against a side who had
won their last three games without conceding a goal.

Doyle needed less than a minute to blow that record out the water and City,
with Andrew Davies back in the fold, never looked back.

Will Atkinson's excellent finish made it 2-0 with ten minutes left and Doyle
fired the third from the penalty spot as City claimed their first league win
of 2013 in style.

Doyle doubles up as Bradford City scrap form book

6:50am Wednesday 13th February 2013

By Simon Parker

Wycombe 0, City 3

Nothing should surprise you in a season when a team from League Two are heading for the League Cup final.

But few would have expected such a convincing result at Adams Park last night. One side had been winning for fun, the other had not picked up

three points since Boxing Day – so much for the form book.

Phil Parkinson maintained before the game that his side were good enough to force their way back into the mix after their indifferent run. And

here was the emphatic proof.

The fact that two of their three goals were scored by Nathan Doyle – who had never hit the net in 71 previous appearances in his two spells at

the club – demonstrated how much everything suddenly clicked into place.

It was a case of third time lucky for two sides who seem to have been avoiding each other like Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao. Both previous

attempts to play in the last two months had fallen foul of the weather.

Up to 14 centimetres of snow had covered the pitch on Monday but it had drained better than expected after thawing to pass a morning inspection.

The surface still looked ropey and was very soft underfoot in places.

It was no surprise that Wycombe had worked so feverishly to get the game on – they went into it on the back of three straight wins and clean

sheets. For City, there were only two points from six outings since that festive victory.

Parkinson rang the changes from the Gillingham defeat. Andrew Davies was the most significant of the five new faces – the centre half's first

involvement since injuring his knee in October. The City boss also took out both first-choice frontmen to partner Andy Gray up front with Garry

Thompson.

The reworked Bantams made a sensational start with a goal after only 53 seconds. Ryan Dickson's long throw-in into the box was flicked on by

Thompson and it dropped for Doyle to half-volley into the corner of the net.

Davies almost had an embarrassing return to action when he met Josh Scowen's opening corner for Wycombe with a firm header towards his own goal.

But fortunately it was straight into the arms of Matt Duke.

The defender then launched into a full-blooded challenge on Stuart Lewis. He won the ball but referee Scott Mathieson thought otherwise and Dean

Morgan's curling free-kick only just flew past the post.

Thompson and Kyel Reid were both lively in the early stages, although the winger was a bit over-ambitious with a 30-yard attempt that flew

harmlessly over the bar.

Wycombe showed glimpses of the confidence of a team bang in form and left back Anthony Stewart met Scowen's corner with a thumping header just

wide of the post.

But City's cracking start had given them a real lift and they were worth that lead.

Reid set off on a trademark run from the halfway line to win a corner which Gary Jones flighted towards Michael Nelson. His knockdown was cleared

as far as Thompson, whose well-struck shot was deflected behind.

Stephen Darby was getting forward whenever the opportunity arose and a lovely pass from Jones set him away to drill in a dangerous cross that

Stewart scrambled away in front of goal.

Just like the first half on Saturday, City were enjoying plenty of possession in opposition territory. Reid had the bit between his teeth and was

proving a handful for the home defence.

He looked to weave his way through again, only to be flattened by Michael Harriman. Jones looked for Gray with his free-kick into the six-yard

box and keeper Jordan Archer punched away unconvincingly.

But City continued to take the game to their hosts and Will Atkinson cut inside to make a beeline for the D, where he hurried a shot that did not

match the build-up play.

The away fans, using their free tickets from before Christmas, still gave it a delayed "ooh" – they were entitled to enjoy the first half of

their evening.

City began the second period in the same positive fashion, with Reid forcing two early corners to take their tally to eight. It was important

that they did not get pinned back.

Morgan hammered a shot off target as Wycombe looked to claw their way back into proceedings and there was a scare from City's next corner as

Doyle's shot was charged down to launch the home side on a counter-attack.

Scowen's pass got Sam Wood the wrong side of Darby and bearing down on goal but Duke pushed his shot round the post. It was the keeper's first

real save of note.

But City were a coat of paint away from a second goal after 63 minutes after a sensational strike from Thompson.

Jones sprayed another dangerous pass into Gray's path and Reid worked his cross back to Thompson for a drive which crashed against the underside

of the bar and bounced down and out before Archer could react.

Wycombe player-boss Gareth Ainsworth made his first change with 20 minutes to go as Bruno Andrade replaced the anonymous Matt McClure. The pacy

substitute wasted no time in trying his luck from a tight angle but it was no threat to Duke.

Gray, who had put in a good shift for City, then made way for James Hanson but Wycombe's growing frustration was illustrated by Joel Grant's

crude foul on Dickson. The winger collected the third home booking.

Lewis swerved a shot off target but there was a hint of desperation in the home side's attacking efforts.

City had the upper hand without a doubt – and took a vice-like grip on the game with two more goals in three minutes.

Reid clipped a cross into the box and Hanson squared to an unmarked Atkinson, who drilled home from 16 yards.

Wycombe were still reeling when Hanson got goal-side chasing a long ball and was tripped in the corner of the box by Archer.

With no Nahki Wells on the pitch, Doyle stepped up for the spot-kick and sent the keeper the wrong way with a cool assurance.

The points were in the bag and Parkinson could withdraw Davies after a tremendous return to arms.

Wycombe were left with nothing to play for except pride – and Duke denied them a late consolation with a fine save when tipping away Morgan's

deflected effort.

FIFA order City to pay Falkirk £215,000 compensation for Mark Stewart

Fifa order Bradford to pay Falkirk for Mark Stewart
By Jim Spence BBC Sport

World football governing body Fifa has awarded Falkirk 250,000 euros in training compensation for Mark Stewart's 2011 move to Bradford City.

The player was a product of Falkirk's academy, which, under Fifa directives, meant the club were due a training fee.

But an anomaly in the striker's birth-date, and differing registration procedures in Scotland and England, made Bradford contest that duty.

The Yorkshire club have 30 days in which to make the payment.

Bradford also have 10 days to decide whether to appeal Fifa's decision to the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

Falkirk chairman Martin Ritchie told the club's website: "We always believed we had a strong case.

"But it has taken a lot of hard work from people in and around the club to get this result and they should be applauded for their tenacity and

efforts.

"And of course, financially, it is a tremendous boost."

The amount converts into approximately £213,000.

After his move in July 2011, Stewart played 15 times for the Bantams before spending the second half of 2011/12 season at Hamilton Accies.

The 24-year-old was released by Bradford in the summer and signed for Scottish Premier League side Dundee in August.

That's the way to do it, says Bradford City boss Parkinson

8:40am Wednesday 13th February 2013

By Simon Parker

Phil Parkinson relished City's first league win of 2013 and insisted: We really needed that.

The Bantams stunned form team Wycombe 3-0 at Adams Park last night, with all the goals coming from midfield.

Nathan Doyle broke his duck for the club with two – including one inside the first minute – and Will Atkinson also cashed in to clinch their

side's first three points since Boxing Day.

Parkinson recalled Andrew Davies from a four-month injury lay-off in a much-changed side and was delighted with the team's display.

He said: "It was such an important victory. We needed it to get back on track and I thought we were excellent.

"Wycombe were the form team in the league and we knew it would be a difficult game. We had to show honesty, commitment and quality and we did

that.

"With Doyley's shooting ability, he should score more. He's as good a striker of the ball as you will get.

"And Will's now got three for the season. I'm pleased because we had a chat before the game that he had to produce more in the final third.

"He's got real calmness on the ball and I need to get him higher up the pitch more often because he's so good in those positions. We need him in

and around that box."

Davies had been pencilled in for an hour's action in the reserves against Chesterfield this afternoon but Parkinson opted instead to throw him

straight back into the first team – and the centre half responded superbly.

"It was a massive ask of him but I thought his inclusion would give the team a big lift," said Parkinson.

"He played slightly longer than we wanted to and we need to keep our fingers crossed that his knee reacts the right way.

"He's very brave and I'm so pleased for him because it's been a long time out."

Garry Thompson partnered Andy Gray up front as Parkinson left out both of his regular strikers. Top scorer Nahki Wells stayed on the bench but

James Hanson came on to have a hand in the second and third goals.

Parkinson said: "Andy's hold-up play is good and Thommo makes those runs behind, so there's a balance.

"James and I were both frustrated on Saturday because he'd had a couple of good chances.

"But what a great player to bring off the bench and his attitude was spot on. He couldn't have done much more when he got on."

Parkinson also revealed positive news on Rory McArdle and has not ruled him out of City's plans for Wembley.

He said: "We are taking it day by day but it's a lot better than the results of the scan. The specialist is a lot happier with it.

"James Meredith is also getting better. His blood tests aren't perfect but he's going in the right direction.

"Players like McArdle, Davies and Meredith are big personalities. You miss them when they're not in the dressing room."

Final whistle - match report

Report by Simon Parker (T&A)

City slipped further behind the promotion pack after suffering a third
league home loss against Gillingham.

While Wembley gets closer, the Bantams continue to stutter in League Two and
have now picked up only two points from six games.

City were the better team in a first half of few chances. Gillingham, the
away-day specialists, hardly got out of first gear.

The only real threat on goal came after 37 minutes. Stuart Nelson parried
Gary Jones' shot straight back out but then made up for it with a superb
tip-over to deny Nahki Wells from the follow-up.

Gillingham stepped it up after the break and made the breakthrough after 64
minutes. It was a bad goal to concede for the home side as Matt Duke
dithered coming for Deon Burton's ball over the top, allowing Cody McDonald
to nip round him and steer into the empty net.

Chris Whelpdale was inches away from a second before James Hanson missed a
golden chance to level, powering a header wide from Kyel Reid's inviting
cross.

Duke came forward for a couple of late corners but Gillingham comfortably
saw off the storm to clinch their tenth win on the road.

When the dust settled - match report

Cup fever having debilitating effect on Bradford City's league form

7:50am Monday 11th February 2013

By Simon Parker

Bradford City 0 Gillingham 1

So Gillingham confirmed what Gary Jones had suspected – City are the team everyone wants to tame.

The skipper had warned before Saturday's game about the dangerous side effect from their record-breaking cup exploits.

City's astonishing progress to Wembley has put League Two on the map – and themselves on the dartboard. Success comes at a price.

The club that humbled three top-flight sides step out for every league game with a whopping great target on their backs.

Each opponent wants the reflected glory of beating the team that beat Aston Villa, Arsenal and Wigan. If teams weren't encouraged enough by the vast surroundings of Valley Parade, that determination to upset their hosts has just cranked up a few more notches.

Gillingham may have the best away record in the division – this was their tenth win on the road. But even Martin Allen's happy travellers saw the Bantams as a major scalp.

"A lot of teams that come here now feel that they are the underdogs," said Gills defender Andrew Frampton. "I've watched Bradford a lot on TV and well done to them for getting to Wembley.

"It's fantastic publicity for League Two and of course they can beat Swansea. They've done it three or four times already, so why not?

"It wasn't mentioned in our preparations but the players knew. We've all been in that situation – well maybe not as good as theirs because they're going to Wembley for a cup final..."

Teams tailing off before a final is nothing new.

Yes, Swansea won handsomely but building up to an occasion like a week on Sunday should not be such an out-of-this-world experience for Premier League players.

Phil Parkinson's problem is how to keep his side's minds fixed on the here and now on Wycombe and Wimbledon; not Wembley. Far easier said than done.

How can life seem normal when the previous week included suit-fitting by Will Smith's London tailor and a photo session for the giant images that will be draped around the stadium on final day?

The proliferation of giant foam Wembley hands and half-and-half City and Swansea scarves in the crowd betrayed the mounting excitement among fans.

The whole place feels like a classroom of six-year-olds trying to concentrate on the last school days before Christmas.

Meanwhile, City's league form and promotion chances continue to nosedive. The Villa home leg remains their only win in 2013 and they have taken only two points from 18 since Boxing Day.

Contrast that with tomorrow night's opposition. City were fifth – 12 places above Wycombe – when the Adams Park game should have been played three days before Christmas.

Now they have dropped to 12th, their lowest position since being spanked at Rotherham on September 1. Wycombe, on the other hand, have jumped above City following four wins in the last five games.

Parkinson and Steve Parkin had gone down to Gillingham last Monday to see one of those and thought the defeated Kent side could be there for the taking at Valley Parade.

Having seen Wycombe outstrip the "leggy" Gills with pace, he included both Kyel Reid and Zavon Hines to run them on the flanks.

It should have worked in a first half that City bossed. The visitors did look lethargic as the game was played out largely in their territory.

But domination of possession could not spark a breakthrough. James Hanson headed over and Stuart Nelson atoned for an unconvincing parry from Gary Jones by acrobatically tipping over the follow-up by Nahki Wells.

The goal would not come and you feared that Gillingham would not appear so disinterested again after the break.

They did up the tempo marginally but still seemed content with breaking things up and spoiling City's rhythm – a task made easier by a bobbly, uneven playing surface.

Matt Duke had not saved a shot in anger for an hour. But then his dithering gifted Gillingham the softest of goals.

Deon Burton showed a clever touch to loft the ball over the back four for strike partner Cody McDonald to chase. But Duke should have come straight away and cleaned up everything.

Instead he was caught on his heels, delaying a fraction too long before deciding to make a dash for it and McDonald rounded his half-hearted challenge with nonchalance to slot home the third goal in four games of his loan from Coventry.

The goal changed the mindset at both ends. Gillingham's protection of yet another triumph on their travels became more intense, while the Bantams became more desperate and rushed.

To Parkinson's obvious frustration on the touchline, their previous attempts to pass the ball around made way for a more direct approach.

It should still have brought a reward with 13 minutes left as Reid put a cross right on the money for Hanson. But once again the big man failed to hit the target with a header he would normally bury with his eyes shut.

That flew in at Villa Park but league games are a different matter. As City keep on discovering.

We're better than this, roars Parkinson after Bradford City slump to 12th

6:50am Monday 11th February 2013

By Simon Parker

Phil Parkinson will not tolerate any more pre-Wembley switching off from City as they continue to slip away in League Two.

The Bantams face trips to Wycombe, the division's form team, tomorrow and Wimbledon at the weekend before the Capital One Cup final.

And Parkinson is determined to revive their faltering league form ahead of the Swansea showdown a week on Sunday.

Gillingham's win at Valley Parade ruined City's send off in their last home game before Wembley. It also dropped them to 12th spot – their lowest

position for five months. Parkinson's side have now lost three in a row at home in the league since their last win on Boxing Day.

He admitted: "There's no way we're walking out at Wembley without getting some more points in the bag.

"That won't be doing ourselves justice. We're better than being a mid-table team.

"This was a big game but we've got two cup finals coming up now before THE cup final. We've got to make sure we fight and scrap for every ball

and play to our maximum."

Gillingham claimed the points with a soft goal from Cody McDonald after keeper Matt Duke hesitated in coming for a through ball. Parkinson

branded the victory "smash and grab" after City controlled most of the game.

"We didn't come under pressure," he said. "We just gave them a very cheap goal.

"It's very frustrating because I thought they were there for the taking.

"If I was a defender or goalkeeper, obviously we're frustrated at conceding that goal but maybe that shouldn't have been the one that won

Gillingham the game.

"At most it should have been the one that got them back in it, because we'd had enough pressure to be ahead."

James Hanson missed City's best chance with a late header that he put wide from Kyel Reid's cross.

Parkinson added: "James has got to hit the target and he knows that. They are defining moments in games of football."

Carl McHugh was rested after making his Republic of Ireland under-21 debut against Holland. Tom Naylor took his place at centre half – and played

well – but has now returned to Derby at the end of his loan.

Andrew Davies was back on the bench for the first time since his knee injury in October. He will be in the squad again for Adams Park.

Parkinson said: "Hopefully he's ready sooner rather than later. I wasn't expecting to use him for more than 15 minutes and only if we were ahead.

"I just felt I had to take Carl out the firing line. People have got to remember he's a young player and he's had a lot of football."

The City boss also confirmed Rory McArdle will see a specialist today to confirm the condition of his injury.

"The results of the scan and the way his ankle is feeling don't quite match up."

From the Official BCFC Website:

GOOD LOAN EXTENDED

Australian defender Curtis Good will be in contention for a place in Phil
Parkinson's starting eleven against Gillingham at the Coral Windows Stadium
this Saturday after agreeing a further extension to his current loan deal.

Like fellow loanee Blair Turgott earlier this week, Good has penned a loan
extension which will keep him at Valley Parade until 3 March 2013. Good's
previous loan deal from parent club Newcastle United only kept him with the
Bantams until last weekend's match at Fleetwood Town.

This new extension for Good will be the second of his time with Parkinson's
squad after the 19 year-old first extended his loan deal with the Bantams
back in early January.

The defender, who has featured as a centre half and a left back for City
during his time with the club, missed last weekend's draw at Fleetwood with
a chest infection but he should be back in the mix for the visit of the
Gills.

All roads lead to Wembley from for Bradford City

10:55am Monday 4th February 2013

By Sports Desk

Bantams fans can find their way to Wembley for the Capital One Cup final, thanks to new signs in the city centre.

Residents awoke yesterday to find new signposts pointing in the direction of the stadium 199 miles away have been installed in New Market Place as cup fever sweeps the district.

The signs are from competition sponsors Capital One, who said fans will now "definitely know the way to Wembley" for the final on Sunday, February 24.

Tickets for the clash went on sale on Wednesday and Bradford City co-chairman last night said he believed City will sell all its 31,852 allocation.

"We believe the 31,000 tickets will all go. The whole city is behind the team who have done a magnificent job," he said.

A Capital One spokesman said: "No one could have predicted a Swansea City-Bradford City final when the competition started in August, but with history making performances from both clubs it promises to be a fantastic climax to a wonderfully unpredictable competition."

When the dust settled - match report

Bradford City left frustrated by rookie ref's penalty ruling

6:30am Monday 4th February 2013

By Simon Parker

Fleetwood 2, City 2

King George V famously uttered some very unflattering words about Bognor – and City felt much the same with the rookie referee from the seaside town.

They left their first-ever trip to this corner of the Fylde coast cursing the man who had travelled up from another equally old-fashioned holiday resort.

The problem with the Capital One Cup odyssey is that we've become spoiled with officials. When you see the likes of Howard Webb, Mike Dean and Phil Dowd effortlessly keeping the action flowing, it makes the next League Two game all the more jarring.

The whistle-blowing standards on Saturday did not just bring everyone back down to earth with a bump. It left a mighty crater on a surface that resembled the nearby beach at Knott End.

Tim Robinson may well go on to become an excellent referee and one day rub shoulders with the Premier League elite. But at the moment he is a rookie learning the trade in his first season on the Football League list – and how it showed.

It would be easy just to point the finger for the controversial penalty that turned City's seemingly secure three points into one after he ruled that James Hanson had deliberately handled in his own six-yard box.

But Robinson was consistently under-par for both sides. Hanson suffered the brunt of his poor decision-making and the visitors were also livid that he saw nothing wrong with Nahki Wells being hurled to the ground.

Equally, the home fans were giving the ref the bird at regular intervals. The generous spot-kick may have made amends but the locals seemed just as unimpressed with his performance.

Phil Parkinson was angry at the penalty that was given – and the one that could/should have been minutes before.

The City boss said: "Nahki's been flattened in the middle of the goal and not got a penalty. Then at the other end we get a ball smashed at a player from two yards. It really is so harsh to drop two points in that manner.

"But I'd said to the ref at half-time that I don't how much fairer James Hanson can jump when he's challenging for the ball.

"He is generally a very honest player, he never goes in with his arms up. I thought it was poor that so many fouls were given against him in the first half.

"They were a young group of officials and I feel they got a lot of calls wrong."

So it was a bittersweet reaction to City's first league game in three weeks. Yet on the face of it, a draw away to the free-spenders of the division is not to be sniffed at.

Fleetwood had flexed their financial muscle once again during the January transfer window, bringing in Kidderminster targetman Jamille Matt for a club-record fee thought to be in the region of £300,000.

That's to go with 'the Beast' Jon Parkin, whose £4,000 weekly wage packet is certainly a beauty. Not bad for a side who play in the third-smallest ground in the league.

Owner Andy Pilley's wealth has catapulted the Cod Army into League Two on the back of five promotions and they are clearly eyeing one more.

For City, it was a character-testing afternoon after the euphoria of Villa Park and all that jazz.

The mini-break in Tenerife had helped to clear minds and freshen bodies. Parkinson said he had noticed the difference straight away when they returned to wet and windy Rawdon Meadows on Friday.

But for the first 40 minutes it appeared that thoughts were still lingering around the Canary Islands pool.

City had sold out their ticket allocation – that seems to be the norm at the moment – and the roar behind the goal reminded them of the battle ahead.

Yet for the majority of a plodding first half, the away fans focused their vocal chords on abusing Gareth Evans. Their own team provided frustratingly little to cheer about.

With memories still fresh of his Rotherham celebrations, Evans was booed with every touch.

His were the first ankles to suffer on the heavy, unyielding pitch – but not before his corner was turned home at the near post by Alan Goodall as Carl McHugh was caught ball-watching.

Rory McArdle had also needed treatment but tried to soldier on. He gave it up just before the break – and was using crutches by the time he took a seat in the dugout for the second half.

Wembley always throws up a heartache story but it would be so cruel if McArdle, the ever-reliable defender, should not be involved in the historic occasion he has done so much to get City to.

Jamie Allen should have punished another moment's slackness from City but flicked a free header over the bar and into the jeering away masses.

But then City came to the party a minute before half-time. Gary Jones, once again their strongest warrior, was barged over by centre half Nathan Pond and up stepped Wells with a bending free-kick which left keeper Scott Davies rooted to the spot.

Ryan Dickson had replaced McArdle, allowing McHugh to move back into the middle alongside new boy Michael Nelson.

The Southampton loanee had looked predictably rusty in his first two outings against Oxford and Crewe. But the training time with his new team-mates looked to have made its mark as he appeared far more up to speed.

Having sat too deep for the first half, Parkinson urged his team to push on to the home side for the second. They answered his call immediately, with Dickson cashing in seven minutes after the restart.

McHugh swept a pass to the left wing to pick out the overlapping full back. Wells was in the middle but space opened up invitingly for Dickson, who kept going and calmly slotted home his first goal in exactly 12 months.

Parkinson said: "Ryan's a very good player but it's been difficult for him. Even though he's trained hard at Southampton, he hasn't played for a long time. That's the problem when you bring loan players in.

"His first two games were always going to be tough but he showed on Saturday what he's all about. He's got great energy and ability and can still get sharper than that on the ball."

Dickson's goal threatened to be the decisive one as City took a stranglehold.

Parkinson was beside himself when Robinson ignored Shaun Beeley's wrestling throw on Wells in the box – and the steam on the sidelines hit boiling level as Goodall rescued Ryan Crowther's free-kick on the byline, hitting Hanson's outstretched left arm with the cross.

The big striker could not get out of the way but the referee blew straight away for the penalty. The fact that Matt Duke was agonisingly close to keeping Parkin's spot-kick out just added to the frustration.

TURGOTT LOAN DEAL EXTENDED

Bradford City have extended the loan period of Blair Turgott from parent
club West Ham United for a further month.

After putting pen to paper on his loan extension - the second of his time
with Phil Parkinson's squad - Turgott, 18, is now scheduled to stay at the
Coral Windows Stadium until Sunday 3 March 2013.

The winger originally joined City from West Ham at the end of November
before agreeing to the first extension of his loan period with Bradford at
the beginning of January.

Turgott missed City's 2-2 draw at Fleetwood Town this weekend after joining
up with the England Under 19s squad ahead of their international friendly
with Denmark this Tuesday.

From the Official BCFC Website:

CUP FINAL COLOURS CONFIRMED

The football club can confirm to supporters City's complete match colours
for their eagerly-anticipated Capital One Cup Final appearance against
Swansea City at Wembley Stadium on Sunday 24 February 2013.

After receiving useful feedback from fans, the club have decided to keep
with their current hooped claret and amber home shirts for the cup final
showpiece and not go with a one-off special design.

To go with City's usual hooped home shirts, Phil Parkinson's men will be
wearing black shorts and black socks at the home of football.

The reason for the change to black shorts and socks from white is because
opponents Swansea - who have an all-white home kit for this season - have
been determined as the 'home' side for the final following the toss earlier
today.

It has also been confirmed this Thursday that match official Kevin Friend
will referee the final.

The Leicestershire-based official has previously overseen the 2012 F.A
Community Shield between Chelsea and Manchester City at the beginning of
this season.

===========================

Match tickets for City's first ever league visit to Fleetwood Town this Saturday (2 February 2013) have now SOLD OUT.

Please do not travel to Fleetwood's Highbury Stadium without a valid match ticket.

Having sold out of their allocation, Phil Parkinson's men are expected to be backed by over 1,400 City supporters during the game.

The match itself will be City's first league fixture in three weeks following back-to-back postponements for the games against Port Vale and Wycombe Wanderers.

City have been given standing and seating sections at Fleetwood. The terracing tickets are in the Percy Ronson Stand, whilst the seats are located in the Parkside Stand.

===========================

From the BCFC Official website:

RITCHIE JONES LEAVES VP

Subject to receiving confirmation of the relevant paperwork being cleared,
the football club can confirm that Ritchie Jones has now left the Coral
Windows Stadium after agreeing to terminate his City contract by mutual
consent.

Jones leaves Valley Parade having made ten appearances for the Bantams this
season.

Bantams boss Phil Parkinson explained: "Ritchie recently expressed a desire
to try and play more first-team football."

"Unable to promise that for him here, I didn't want to stand in his way in
his search for more games.

"Ritchie leaves the football club with our best wishes."

As a free agent, Jones will still be able to move to another club outside
the transfer window despite today's 11:00pm deadline for the January
transfer window.
