Final whistle - match report

Report By Simon Parker (T&A)

Magnificent City are into the Capital One Cup quarter-finals after another
dramatic penalty victory.

The Bantams bridged a 59-place gap to dump Premier League Wigan 4-2 on
spot-kicks after the game had finished goalless at the end of extra-time.

City, backed by 5,000 screaming fans, were deadly with all their penalties
while Shaun Maloney fired over the bar before Matt Duke made the decisive
save from Jordi Gomez.

Ivan Ramis had the ball in the City net in the first ten minutes but his
header was ruled out for offside.

Matt Duke, one of the six changes, saved at the feet of Mauro Boselli and
Jordi Gomez fired over. But City held firm and Wigan's early pressure soon
blew itself out.

City had sporadic moments - and twice saw penalty appeals turned down -
before Duke made an alert block to deny Gomez right on half-time.

The visitors deserved to go in level for the way they had fought back after
a tough first 20 minutes.

Duke saved again from a long-range shot by David Jones at the start of the
second half but resilient City still kept Wigan at arm's length.

City had a great chance 15 minutes from time when Zavon Hines broke from the
halfway line but Ali Al Habsi blocked his shot at the near post.

Extra-time was all one-way traffic with Wigan clocking up the chances. The
best fell to Gomez after 111 minutes but he slotted wide when clean through.

Duke saved well from the dangerous Shaun Maloney as City hung on for the
shoot-out - where they finished an unbelievable night in style.

Bradford City boss Phil Parkinson declared himself "ecstatic" with his
team's efforts after the npower League Two outfit pulled off a giant-killing
at Wigan to secure a place in the Capital One Cup quarter-finals.

Asked how he felt about the victory, Parkinson said: "I am ecstatic."

"I thought it was a night of great discipline by the team. There were a lot
of big hearts out there.

"Wigan give you problems that are ones we don't normally come up against in
League Two, in terms of the movement of the team and their shape.

"In the first 15 minutes we found it tough to cope with, but as the game
went on, the discipline and commitment of the team grew. I am really proud
of the team tonight.

"Everyone stuck to the job over the 120 minutes and we got our rewards for
that.

"If you play with commitment, desire and discipline like we did tonight you
do get rewarded and I am really pleased with the way we played."

Parkinson now has his sights set on drawing a big-name club in the last
eight to provide Bradford with a cash boost that can aid their League Two
promotion push.

Parkinson, whose side are currently fifth in the fourth tier, said: "In
terms of finance first of all, it is huge for the club, because there isn't
a great deal of money at Bradford.

"But if we can get a good draw now, that is going to really help us for the
rest of this season and going into next season.

"We have a lot of injuries at the moment, and if you look at how many
players we had out tonight, it will give you some understanding of what a
great victory it was for us.

"But equally, there is going to be a time where I am going to want to knock
on the chairman's door and say 'look, we are going to need to improve this
squad' because teams at the top end of League Two as the season goes on do
get better, and we are going to have to do that, especially with the
injuries we have at the moment."

Wigan manager Roberto Martinez expressed his frustration at the Latics'
inability to seal victory in a game he thought they had controlled well.

"I never felt that we lost concentration or allowed Bradford to have a big
say in the game," said Martinez, who made nine changes to his first XI from
Saturday's league win over West Ham.

"I think we controlled it really well, and we were very unfortunate not to
convert any of the chances.

"That was why it was a feeling of frustration more than anything."

BBC

Bradford City defender Andrew Davies has been ruled out for up to four months with a knee injury.

The 27-year-old former Middlesbrough and Stoke player picked up the injury in Saturday's defeat at Burton Albion.

Davies had been ever-present in the league for Phil Parkinson's side this season since joining from the Potters.

His injury is a further blow to the Bantams who will be without centre-half Luke Oliver for the rest of the campaign because of an Achilles

injury.
